Wed, 13 Jul 2011 15:21:00 -0700 Last night in Greece - awards and reflection http://mo-yom.com/last-night-in-greece-awards-and-reflection http://mo-yom.com/last-night-in-greece-awards-and-reflection

On the final night of every MO-YOM trip, the group gathers and the staff awards each team member with a memorable title - something funny or significant that they did during our time together. After the "awards ceremony" we each take a turn to share some of our reflections from our time on the foreign missions field. It's always one of the best nights of the entire trip. We laughed, shared, cried, and prayed together before heading up to our rooms to rest up for a long day of travel tomorrow.

We can't wait to see everyone in St. Louis tomorrow evening! We have many stories to tell and memorable, life-changing moments to share about our time in Greece. MO-YOM is changing lives; and YOMers are changing the world!!!

First of all, we apologize for that there has been fewer updates & pictures since Sunday; the Internet bandwidth at our hotel in Thessaloniki has not been good enough to post pictures & blog from our laptops. The last couple posts have been from brother Levine's cell phone. When we get to Athens tomorrow night, we'll have better service.

First off today we had a wonderful time of devotion as Angela Coltharp challenged us to carry what God's done in Greece back home with us.
Our visit to the Royal tombs of Phillip (father to Alexander the Great) was next. We then spent the rest of the day further tracing Paul's footsteps from Thessaloniki to Berea. The highlight for all was the service we held at Paul's Altar. This was the site where it is believed Paul prayed, preached & made converts in Berea. God spoke to us again through Bro. Sim Strickland, as well Daniel Badger. We had a great time of prayer and consecration.
We are now at a quaint Greek restaurant enjoying dinner with a traditional Greek band playing in the background.

YOM team sends LOTS of LOVE to all our friends & families back home!!

Quick update from the road...
Left the hotel Monday, after a good breakfast, for the 2 hour drive to the ancient city of Philippi.
Ellie Harder did a wonderful devotion about the process of the clay on the potters wheel.
We drove through the mountains, along the beautiful Aegean sea.
We toured the ancient city ruins, which included several partial structures, remains of 3rd century churches and the remains of the 1st century jail at Philippi, believed to have held Paul & Silas in Acts 16.
We then went Lydia's Creek, where Paul baptized Lydia & her household, also in Acts 16. There, we had a powerful service and an extended time of prayer. Bro Strickland & Rose Pamer spoke to us.
Then we were off for a brief stop at the remains of the old Roman Road.
By this time we were more than ready for a late lunch. We at sausage, chicken & beef patties.
On the drive back to Thessaloniki, we stopped at Amphipolis, to see the famous Lion statue that Alexander the Great built to honor his 3 best generals.
We have just arrived back in Thessaloniki and will be eating a late dinner on the sea shortly.

Sat, 09 Jul 2011 13:08:00 -0700 VBS photos & update! http://mo-yom.com/vbs-photos-update http://mo-yom.com/vbs-photos-update

The YOM team arrived at the church in the morning and hit the ground running, leading the groups of children to their stations and activities and making a special effort to connect with each one of them and communicate messages like “God is watching over you” and “God listens to you”. The day concluded with a final round-up session in which Bro. Luke Levine explained how God has a special gift for each and every one of us – the Holy Ghost! The children eagerly responded to the invitation of the Spirit of God and every member of the YOM team was involved with helping and praying with a child. As previous posts mentioned, 8 received the Holy Ghost for the first time and over 30 children were in attendance.

After VBS we rode the subway to a mall to do some shopping and get dinner at the food court. We've arrived back at the hotel and some YOMers are still preparing for tomorrow's church service. YOMers will be involved as a worship band, sign language team, choir, testimonies, and preaching. We've also trained a children's choir and sign language team for tomorrow's service. We appreciate your prayers and look forward to all that God is going to continue to do while we're in Athens!

Fri, 08 Jul 2011 13:20:00 -0700 GREAT start to our VBS here in Athens!! http://mo-yom.com/great-start-to-our-vbs-here-in-athens http://mo-yom.com/great-start-to-our-vbs-here-in-athens

The MO-YOM team kicked off Vacation Bible School at Crossroads UPC in Athens this afternoon! Before taking a subway ride to the church, we enjoyed a breakfast buffet at the hotel and had a morning “meeting” with the entire team. Bro. Luke Levine outlined the day's planned activities, and then the group was addressed by YOMer Brock Fierge, who spoke about the events in Athens recorded in Acts 17 and encouraged the team to be devoted to and focused upon the missions work both at hand and back at home.

Upon arriving at Crossroads Church YOMers teamed up in doing some final preparations for the VBS stations and activities. Every child who attended was impacted by the theme message that “God Made You” and “God is wild about You”. Songs were sung (and acted out, of course!), snacks were shared, games were played, and connections were made between each YOMer and the children and parents. During the course of the afternoon, the YOMers even taught the children a few new songs, including the always popular state-side favorite - “Father Abraham”.

The team returned to the hotel and ate Pizza Hut and practiced some of the songs for tomorrow before resting up for another full day of Vaction Bible School tomorrow!

Thanks for all your prayers; you can also keep up with our activities here in Greece by following @MO_YOM on Twitter.

Thu, 07 Jul 2011 13:08:00 -0700 Day 1 Update - The Athens Tour http://mo-yom.com/day-1-update-the-athens-tour http://mo-yom.com/day-1-update-the-athens-tour

Day 1 of MO-YOM 2011: GREECE is in the books! And what a long and exciting day it has been. After our 11 hour flight to Athens, we met up with one of the missionaries, Bro. Jonathan Strickland, and got off to a quick start. Soon after checking into our rooms at Hotel Presidente, the YOM team headed into the heart of Athens to get a firsthand look at what life in Greece is all about.

Athens is a beautiful city of more than 5 million people, and the architecture is even more wondrous than photos or words can relate. Many of the YOMers have taken notice of an interesting sight: nearly everything in the buildings and streets are made of marble! It is an abundant natural resource in Greece, and is used very often in all sorts of endeavors.

By way of walking and subway transportation, our first stop was the Acropolis. The word “acropolis” is derived from two Greek words - “top” and “city”. The Athenian Acropolis sits on a high hill in the center of the city. It is here where the ancient Greeks built monuments to their gods, a few of which still stand and are very famous and recognizable by people all over the world - most notably, the Parthenon. From the top of the Acropolis we could see the entire city of Athens, including Zeus' temple and the 1896 and 1996 Olympic sites.

As we descended from the Acropolis to the ancient city center below, we were able to spend a while visiting and taking in the biblical historical site of Mars Hill, the place where Paul preached and reasoned with the Greek philosophers of his day about their many idols and their monument to “the unknown god” (this event is recorded in Acts 17). It was amazing to walk where Paul walked and to sit where he taught. Bro. Strickland spoke to us briefly about Paul's message and audience in Acts 17. Bro Levine then spoke to us about how we face some of the very same challenges today, as Paul did centuries ago.

Continuing our descent though the site of an ancient market, we had dinner at a city restaurant (chicken/pork gyros or beef kabobs) and did some souvenir shopping in the nearby shops. We arrived back at the hotel around 8:30pm, all pretty worn out. We met briefly to plan the VBS that starts tomorrow. We are excited to finally be in Greece and to see all God is doing in this nation!

Keep checking back for updates as we go; you can also link to us on Twitter by following @MO_YOM. Thanks so much for all your prayers! We're already making memories for a lifetime and being transformed by the missions work in Greece.
